History

Corpus Christi Chorale was founded at Del Mar College in l945 as a young, fledging choral group.

Dr. Ron Shirey 1961-1972. During his tenure, CCC performed with San Antonio Symphony and Corpus Christi Symphony. He took the chorale to Mexico City for a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Mexico City Symphony in the Palace des Belles Artes.

Dr. C. M. Shearer 1972-1974.

Dr. Eugene McKinley 1974-2005. Chorale grew in both numbers and music depth in his tenure. Chorale performed Handel’s Messiah annually with CCSO, major works such As Bach’s Magnificat with the Austin Sinfonietta. Other milestones:

  • 1987 Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor at Lincoln Center.
  • 1990 Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia with the Paul Winter Consort.
  • 1991 David Fanshawe’s African Sanctus with David Fanshawe.
  • 1995 Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass with the composer conducting.

Dr. Sam Logsdon 2005-2007. Chorale moved from Del Mar College to TAMU-CC. In 2006 Chorale presented Karl Jenkins’ Mass for Peace in the new Performing Arts Center at TAMU-CC, as well as sang Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with CCSO.

Arlene Long 2007-2008 while the University conducted a search to replace the retiring Dr. Logsdon.

Dr. Ross Bernhardt 2008-2015. Chorale presented Brahms’ Requiem and a number of compositions by Dr. Bernhardt.
